A Tribute: Marilyn Monroe

On 5 August 2012, it will be 50 years since the death of screen icon Marilyn Monroe. Now usually I avoid the obsession with celebrities that comes along with the film industry but when you read some of the things she has said you realise she isn’t just a pretty face but was self-aware, wise and witty and deserves all the fandom she gets.

This is just a quick tribute.

“'I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

There are a handful of films of hers that I have yet to enjoy but one film in particular, The Misfits, made me realise that she was really something special. Her death was untimely as her adventure into more serious characters was only beginning.

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

Monroe perfected the idea of the air-head blonde, an idea that still strongly resonates half a century later. It is all too clear however, that in reality, she was anything but.

And ofcourse is an icon for most women not only saying the brilliant line “Women wanting to be equal with men lack ambition” and also

"A wise girl kisses but doesn't love, listens but doesn't believe, and leaves before she is left."

She will also be remembered for her musical talent, not just for the classic 'Diamonds are a girls best friend' but singing happy birthday to JFK and of course any movie that gave her the opportuinity.

We salute you Ms Monroe, your inspiration will be felt for generation to come.

“This life is what you make it. Not matter what, you're going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth. But the good part is you get to decide how you're going to mess it up. Girls will be your friends - they'll act like it anyway. But just remember, some come, somg go. The ones that stay with you through everything - they're your true best friends. Don't let go of them. Also remember, sisters make the best friends in the world. As for lovers, well, they'll come and go too. And babe, I hate to say it, most of them - actually pretty much all of them are going to break your heart, but you can't give up becuase if you give up, you'll never find your soul mate. You'll never find that half who makes you whole and that goes for everything. Just because you fail once, doesn't mean you're gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don't, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life's a beautiful thing and there's so much to smile about.”
